How Much Lower Can Higher Education Sink?

From me living in a area where Universities and colleges are abundant, I'd say much lower.

From me, who taught at West Point for three years and college-level journalism at the Defense Information School for two yet was rejected by search committees at 63 college and universities to which I applied for tenure-track teaching positions, I have to agree. As early as the late '80s I realized my having a Ph.D. in hand, my dissertation published and writing chapters and forewords for several books, plus award-winning articles in peer-reviewed journals would count for not because: I was a 40-year-old retired armor major, all of my teaching experience was in army schools, I was an enlisted Vietnam vet with a CIB and Purple Heart, and my major field was military history. It mattered not that I could also teach U.S. diplomatic, political and African American history (the latter my being white was the disqualifier--or so I was told). Bottom line, I was a conservative who didn't work in race, class, progressive, gender or LGBTQ+ studies. So, I quit looking for tenure, did some adjunct teaching and settled on book editing until my disabilities forced me to retire at age 55.

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - That's sad. It seems academia is only looking to promote and nurture its mirror image thought and not thoughts of all perspectives. That process is less learning in higher education and more indoctrinated. Society as a whole needs to fix that. Doesn't matter if you're Democrats, Republicans, Conservative, Liberal, or Conservative you should welcome ALL schools of thought and thought processes. Especially those you disagree with (Which I agree is hard to do. But I try). Not just those you agree with.

They told us decades ago what their plans were, many just didn't listen and the remaining agreed with them. Those who agreed were failing up while pushing the best educators out.

This is the primary reason I have stopped donating to my alma mater. The school I once loved is gone forever, and is now a morass of "cancel culture" and "woke" nonsense. The office of alumni relations sent me a letter a few years ago asking why I hadn't recently donated. I replied that I was a 70+ year old Caucasian male of conservative political beliefs, and that I had not seen anything in any of my university's publications for years that came anywhere close to addressing my beliefs. I haven't heard from them since, so I sincerely doubt they plan to change their approach.
