Maj. Gerald Johnson stands next to his P-47D in which he scored 18 aerial victories before being shot down on 27 March 1944 while commanding the 63d Ftr. Sqdn.

The P-47 Thunderbolt was a very heavy fighter with an enormously powerful engine. Nicknamed "The Jug", the P-47 was a versatile fighter that was adept at air to ground missions shooting up German armor and air to air combat shooting down German fighters. Capt Johnson and Capt Gabby Gabreski, both multi-ace fighter pilots, flew the P-47 with great success.

As did Maj. Robert S. Johnson, Capt. Fred Christensen, Capt. Walker Mahurin, Capt. Walter Beckham, Col. "Hub" Zemke, Col. Dave Schilling, and Col. Neal Keerby--the latter in the Pacific--to name a few.
