Please help me understand why that doesn't just fall within the Air Force

If I ruled the world, I would have them subordinate to the Secretary of the Air Force. Some say the USMC are the best part of the Navy Department. If I was elected potentate, I would demand a recount.

They are under the department of the Air Force. Having a separate space force provides space leaders to have a seat at the table for the proper resources on par with the air power proponents. It had been on a decline ever since SPACECOM was turned into NORTHCOM.

Although I know that Space Force actually does exist as a new branch of the service I wonder how much that needed to happen. The US Air Force already had a Space Command that carried on those functions. Like many Commands in current time it also had already involved other branches of the Armed Forces in it's operation such as many unified Commands do. I get concerned when We continue to add more and more agencies to the already top heavy government structure. I don't have all the answers and its not about if I support the new structure but wondering if We needed a new added branch to do what a existing Command was already doing ? Maybe some of You have thoughts on this or some insight that maybe I don't have. Not just in the Armed Force but all over the Federal Government We keep seeming to add agencies and spread into too many others to operating on their own when that usually wasn't going well with the current excess.

Space Force is in fact a branch of service under the Dept of the Air Force (similar to the Marines and the Navy). The Air Force also wasn't the only service, prior to the Space Force, which carried out space functions. The problem is, living in an air centric service such as the Air Force, space had trouble getting a seat at the table (wrt resources). It got worse at 9/11 when we turned SPACECOM into NORTHCOM. That took away much of the Joint level of focus, placing AFSPC as the primary command (one of many of MAJCOMs which had to compete with service level resource requirements).

As for spreading ourselves thin, I don't think this really did that. All of the manpower assets are coming from each of the services (mostly the AF), to include almost all the senior leader billets. They are now able to focus their efforts as a service and I've worked with them personally from a cyber perspective and they are restructuring those capabilities in the right direction.

Thanks for the information and education. I should have "googled" before I posted.

Administratively and logistically, the Space Force is under the Dept of the Air Force; appropriate comparison to the relationship of the Navy and Marines.
