..."JAN. 6 SUSPECT BECOMES REFUGEE IN BELARUS

"The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol will hold a business meeting to consider a report recommending that the House of Representatives cite Peter Navarro and Daniel Scavino, Jr. for criminal contempt of Congress and refer them to the United States Attorney," the committee said in a notice obtained by the Washington Examiner.

Scavino, who served as the White House deputy chief of staff, was subpoenaed last year. He was among the first people the committee subpoenaed when it began its work. In a letter last September, the committee pointed out that Scavino had conversations with Trump the day before the riot took place about efforts to thwart certification of the 2020 election. He sued the panel to try and stop the committee from obtaining his phone records from Verizon.

Navarro, who served as the White House trade adviser, was subpoenaed last month. Despite writing a book, In Trump Time, that included passages about the 2020 election and his "Green Bay Sweep" plan to overturn the election results, Navarro declared that he would not comply with the subpoena. Earlier this month, he defied a deadline to appear for a deposition, citing former President Donald Trump's declaration of executive privilege.

"If President Trump waives the privilege, I would be happy to testify," Navarro said in a statement to the Washington Examiner following news of next Monday's meeting. "Until this matter has been settled at the Supreme Court, where it is inevitably headed, the committee should cease its tactics of harassment and intimidation. I would be happy to cooperate with the committee in expediting a review of this matter by the Supreme Court and look forward to arguing the case."

Each contempt count carries a risk of up to a year behind bars and $100,000 in fines, should the Justice Department prosecute. Monday's meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Last year, upon the committee's recommendations, the House held Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows in contempt. Bannon is slated to face trial in June. Unlike Meadows, he was not a member of the Trump administration during the events of Jan. 6.

So far, the Justice Department has not pursued Meadows. He served as chief of staff during the Trump administration and has cited executive privilege for his failure to comply with the subpoena."
