And to think I sold my Remington pump 30-06! It wasn't fun to shoot anymore. The Mossberg Flex MVP in 556 is a lot nicer to my shoulder.

I have a Remington Bolt action 30.06 and it is a Mule to shoot but when it was my only deer rifle I had no reservations of taking a 300 to 400 yard shot with it.

MSgt Dale Johnson I never shot one beyond 150 yrds.yards. The places I hunt in N. GA, it is difficult to find anywhere where I would shoot further than 200 yrds. The past year I mostly hunted with my bow.

Maj Robert Thornton - Same thing here in Ohio where I hunt, Because my shoulder was messed up in service I hunt with a Crossbow during Bow season.
During gun season I shoot a Thompson Centerfire Black Powder rifle that a friend and I worked up the ballistics and Powder to get a zero to 200 yards shot. It starts out 2 1/2 inches low (from center of scope) crosses Zero at about 72 Yards out, Peaks at 147 yards out at 3 inches High, drops back to zero at 170 yards and goes almost 3 inches low at 200. My Omega is sweet to shoot too, only drawback is One shot, but I haven't missed with it yet.

That's a great question that will certainly vary from "expert to expert". I used to own the time-honored household favorite, the Winchester Model '94 in .30-30. It was at one time touted as the caliber that has accounted for more whitetail deer than any other in the United States. Don't know if that's still the accepted truth or not, these days.

Many of these I haven't seen since I was a teenager. My first rifle was a Winchester .22 LR, Long, Short pump fondly called a gallery gun. Still have it.
