Neil Diamond - Coming to America
Many immigrants traveled from their countries to live a life of freedom in the USA. Neil Diamond sings of this experience in his song, "America."

What great resilience and stick-to-it-iveness--a fair description for most immigrant families who want a better future for their kids...
I was one of six kids in my family (the eldest, our brother, didn't survive his first year) who were all born in Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka), an island paradise, but without much economic opportunity. Our parents decided to move to the United Kingdom, and the only way was to plan for months, arrange with relatives in London and points in between to get us there--in a van the size of a Ford Econoline, modified as a caravan. It took the better part of a year, getting held up in the Khyber Pass by bandits, nearly rolling off the side of steep mountain near from a treacherous road, but also interspersed with interesting adventures along the way. England gave us a wonderful educational grounding, and I moved to the USA as a teenager to seek opportunities here, then ended up in the Air Force, where I extended my education and life experience. It's been a great journey, with rich experiences.
