The Republicans will read the topic and often say the government will take all the guns and they will be defenseless. It is such a quantum leap and irrational. One of the posters who is a proponent of gun ownership ingloriously politicked about guns before the bodies of the poor folks in Uvalde, TX were cold. It was amazing.

I do not want the government knowing what guns I own. Gun safety courses and safes are old ideas. Remember in the 50's thru early 80's when most school districts had rifle ranges and grades 8-12 had to take a gun safety course? Then the liberals decided to cut those courses and marksmanship programs...along with Votech and shop.

Gun registration is a non-starter because history shows us how tyrants moved quickly to gun confiscations in select groups. Jim Crow in US, Jews in Nazi Germany, Stalin in Russia and Mao in China to name a few historical examples. Stop any legislation that will imping our 2nd Amendment rights.
We need to improve our mental health system. The US now has 1/4 the number of MH hospital beds when compared to the 1960's.
Start enforcing the laws already on the books. That also means recalling the George Soros supported DAs that have made the justice system a joke. Holding criminals accountable and stop the judicial revolving door of no cash bails for violent crimes.
Bring back the Marksmanship Safety courses in the middle and high school levels in all school districts. This will help stop demonizing the tool (fire arms) and put the focus on the individual responsible for the crime.
Make our schools "hard targets" on the model of the Israeli system.

As long as the gun safety courses and test are provided from the government for free, then yes I'm all for these. They seem like a very, very modest requirement for something all gun owners should have.
Having said that, I don't know that these would have stopped any shootings.

So is the government going to teach pressure cooker safety lessons as well? What about knife safety or blunt object safety?
Point is someone filled with rage can purchase a couple of pressure pots for a lot less than any AR without any age restriction and kill a lot of people. One of the Boston bombers was 19.

Funny. When I was still in, I had a POW. Army didn't know about it because I didn't live on post and didn't bring it on post.
So there goes that ENTIRE argument.
Unless, of course, this Marine is advocating that we lock down the ENTIRE country, with a fence around the whole damned thing, limited points of entry, armed guards at every entry point, and all vehicles being subject to search at all times, but especially when entering or leaving the country. Because that is how the military is able to make their gun rules work.
Oh, also, when we sign up, we voluntarily agree to obey orders, and voluntarily agree to subject our own personal rights and freedoms to the greater good of the entire nation. There is that little piece, as well. Expecting to hold civilians to military standards - or even subjecting them to military rules - has never been a good idea. And has never been VIEWED as a good idea by smart, rational people, either.
