I Was In About The 5th Grade When Eisenhower Was Running For President...
Political Buttons & Bumper Stickers Were The Rage, And All Of Eisenhower's Simply Stated:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I LIKE IKE" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And He Won By A Land Slide.
I remember the campaigning . . . and one news report on t.v. when he was riding in a convertible, sitting on the top of the backseat, waving.
I'm Sure There Must Be a News Photo
Showing What You Just Reminded Us Of....
I'll Check It Out, And If Found, I'll Bring It Right Back Here,
I Found Several Photographs, But It Wont Allow Me To Copy & Paste...
Just Ask "Photographs Of Dwight D, Eisenhower":, And You'll Find Many, But I Couldn't Locate The One You Happened To Described
Ike displayed quiet but determined strength and fortitude and was a quick study in strategy and tactics. That, combined with his determined vision and clear direction, made him the one person who could--and did--lead the allied forces to victory.
That was clearly unlike MacArthur, who was far more of a showboater than a leader, and was all about arranging the press cameras around him and using his retinue to blast press announcements of where he was going, or when he was coming ashore, as if to save the day.
(As an aside, it's clear to me that Schwartzkopf modeled himself after MacArthur, always hamming it up for the cameras to salve his gigantic ego).
Ike knew his job, knew what he had to do, knew the strengths and challenges of the leaders under him, and acquitted himself superbly well, and by extension, helped the allies do the same. I don't think we've really had a military leader like him since. In my mind, Ike IS the rubric of leadership!
SGT Mary G. it definitely is good... and shows what the Republican Party was back then. My parents were common hard-working folk who were Republican Precinct Committeeman & Vice. I've posted part 1 of George Wallace. It's long... however it's worth your time... trust me/
SGT (Join to see) I used to attend precinct meetings, prior to being in the Army and after. Helped with envelope stuffing, mailing, worked as an election official. Was the youngest person there in my 20s everyone else quite a ways past retirement! Haven't in the past 30 years though. Although, I did work elections a few times, not since Obama was president, though. Don't know if it is the same everywhere, but around here it is necessary to be a card carrying party member and pay dues to be welcome, and informed of meetings.
I saw that you posted the George Wallace video . . . I remember him making hugely terrible cruel racist comments on t.v. So I just do not take an interest in him - although I suppose there is something to be learned<sigh>
