Russian surveillance aircraft entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone twice in two days, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said Tuesday.
The Alaska region of the defense command, commonly known as NORAD, detected the aircraft, which "remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace," according to a news release.
An air defense identification zone is a self-declared area of airspace surrounding a country or territory within which it will seek to identify foreign military aircraft. Although the zones have no basis in international law, breaching another territory’s zone is seen as an act of aggression.
For months ahead of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China regularly sent warplanes into the self-ruling island’s air defense identification zone.

I was up there during the Cold War, 1978-1982. This happened very often but usually went unreported by news agencies. Probably because the military kept this sort of action under wraps when possible.

Yes, Soviet aircraft routinely came up to the edge of our airspace (and occasionally into our airspace) on a near daily basis -- exactly as US and other NATO aircraft routinely came up to (and occasionally into) their airspace. And their ships and aircraft made close passes around our ships and aircraft in international waters -- just as we made close passes around theirs. None of this is anything new to anyone who served during the so-called "Cold War" (which occasionally wasn't as cold as the official public records would have you believe).
No that the supposed "Cold War" is supposedly over, we get these silly news items saying we wet our pants because we saw the big bad bear somewhere. Of course none of these articles ever mention that this is nothing new and none of these articles ever mention that we have always done the same and still do.
