LOL, that's pretty funny but I have to agree with her they are playing the harshness of the language a bit more than necessary.

My first tour in Germany was in Augsburg, deep in Bavaria -- second tour was Berlin, with a few months at Helmstedt. Almost the same language in writing, but plenty of differences as a spoken language. Something like the difference between the Deep South vs New England speaking American English. My German was never up to the conversational level, but during my second tour whenever I did speak German I would first be mistaken for a Bavarian, before they realized I was an American.

German schools all require a second language and in most schools English was the only choice (is it even a choice if there is no other option). Nearly all Germans speak English much better than they think they do (often better than many Americans). The easiest way I found to get Germans to speak English was for the American to try speaking German -- in almost all cases our German was bad enough that they would speak English instead of trying to understand our German.
