Has always been my favorite CW battlefield. I've led numerous staff rides--mostly to Gettysburg and Antietam, but also to both Bull Runs, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor, plus covered the Shenandoah Valley battle sites. None of them can compare to Antietam.

If you want to know why McClellan lost--despite having a copy of Lee's battle plan--just look at where the Mac and Lee positioned their HQs on the battlefield: Lee chose a central location from which he or staff officers could reach key subordinate leaders within a five-minute ride. McClellan, on the other hand, chose the Pry house on a bluff overlooking the battlefield. Great for observations, but it took at least 20 minutes on horseback to get messages to key subordinates. . . .

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. I dated a History major in college and we hit every CW battlefield in Virginia and a 200 of so mile radius of the school.
