MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. Wow, what a Battle!!!! The last sentence of this story put a smile on my face..... " The Germans would maintain a healthy respect for Patton and his Third Army through the duration of the war in Europe."

Yes, based on their evaluation of American senior leaders, the Germans were certain that LTG Patton would lead the Allied invasion of Europe. That was one of the factors that made Operation Bodyguard, the Allied deception plan supporting Operation Overlord, so effective. Patton and the imaginary First U.S. Army Group (FUSAG) convinced the Germans to keep their 15th Army in the Pas de Calais and out of Normandy.

The Germans regarded the story that Patton had been suspended for slapping a GI as the worst sort of disinformation. They could not imagine that America's best fighting general could be sidelined for what they saw as such an inconsequential act.
