Since the "island" was made as small as possible, the only work areas in the superstructure are the bridge, chart room, radar and surveillance systems, and cockpit control room. But what Is Under The Flight Deck At The Rear Of An Aircraft Carrier?

That area used to be called the ''spud locker'' where potatoes were stored. Pilots joked that if they flew too low and came aboard an aircraft carrier, they would crash into the pantry.

But on some ships, that room was the "jet engine shop" where jet engines were overhauled and tested. Because the jet shop is close to the stern, it is convenient to move and test the engines after maintenance.

Just two decks below the flight deck are the hangar bay. It occupies more than two-thirds of the length of the whole ship. It can hold spare jet engines, other heavy equipment, more than 60 aircraft, and fuel tanks. It keeps them in four zones separated by sliding doors which act as a means of stopping a fire from spreading in the case of a fire incident."
