That is quite a distance, could be I guess lucky shot or not the test is in the results. Often people with great skills and practice with firearms though can adjust for where a bullet travels on long distance shots to allow for instance the round sinking lower as it travels a longer distance well beyond the maximum effective range of the rifle through elevation for example by raising the position and aiming higher maybe even above the intended targeted individual to allow for the drop in the round. The maximum effective range before a drop in a fired round for an M16 was 500 Yards or 1500 feet. It may be luck, I was never a sniper but did make a long range kill on one Viet Cong in 1968 by taking direct aim then raising the position of My M16 prior to taking the shot above His head and the drop I figured out about right and the round hit Him in the head. He wasn't a hidden target and was in plain sight and standing still and upright looking to see where We were and didn't use proper cover to protect Himself and make a smaller target. My only lifetime long distance shot at a live target human or animal. Most our shooting was close in and well within range. I don't know the distance of My shot but certainly nothing as far as His maybe one mile or slightly less.

Still an outstanding achievement! I carried an M79 in combat so didn't have to worry about long distances. I would've felt safer with a .45 as a sidearm as per TO&E, but the officers got them all. . . .

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - I had trained with the M79 and also the XM148 that was attached to the M16. both fired the 40 mm grenades but didn't actually carry either. For a handgun We were issued the Smith and Wesson Model 15, Combat Masterpiece 38 caliber revolver as a sidearm along with 250 rounds of ammo. Mostly it was the M16 We carried and were issued 15 magazines of ammo but could get as much as We wanted beyond that. I had fired the 45 but never got to carry it on duty the only USAF guys that did I'm aware of while I was at Da Nang Vietnam there were guys assigned to town Patrol and they worked with the Marine MPs. I was never on Town Patrol though, it was a long term assignment for those that did as their regular duty assignment.

Interesting, but unconfirmed or confirmed it's Ukraine. I don't trust them either way.
