APOD: 2023 January 23 – The Colliding Spiral Galaxies of Arp 274

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the January 23rd edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "The Colliding Spiral Galaxies of Arp 274." We reach waaaay into the way-back machine this morning with a re-processed April 2009 image of three galaxies that lie far from Earth towards the constellation Virgo. How far? 400 million light years.
More recent data (2017) suggests that the three galaxies may not be interacting at all. Redshift measurements of the three galaxies give these radial velocity values, from left to right: 7483, 8654, and 7618 km/s. The relatively high redshift for the center galaxy means that it is much farther away - about 65 million light years (20 megaparsecs) behind the other two galaxies. Thus, the center galaxy is likely a background object.

Our previous assumptions were wrong. I suspect with better imaging and new ways of managing data we are going to find more of this.
