The Recruiters could use this and these types of factual heroes in History of the Services to perhaps entice more Volunteers to join a Positive change in Numbers signing up and inspiring others to make their mark in the Service.
The Duty Honor Country mentality is generally pooh-poohed by todays social norms.
So , when Duty and Country are no longer the " inspirational draw they were, use Honor as a calling card for the youth to join. Honor in being all Key members of a team. Change the outlook the youth have. And gear it more towards a Sense of them changing the " Negative " outlook by Society through changing the Path of the Services . Make them know that they can literally Change the Service's Reputation by being part of a Group that are young, vital , and the Future of America . Appeal to the desire to make a change in overcoming the negative aspects of the Military into becoming a member of the Team.
Making History through being part of the Team . Changing the aspects Society sees as negative into what the Service can be. The recruits will be " Part of History" in the Making. Strengthening both themselves and the Military by volunteering and maybe make a Career of the Service , effecting positive change in the Military and Society by becoming part of the New Military .

You could also use the makings of the candidate can do more from the inside to build up the positive outlook for the military from being on the inside than they could on the outside.
Talk with them on how positive change can be done easier with the candidate being an example for the Service in their actions and how they carry themself in the Public Eye. If any of their friends say, they sold out, just have the candidate tell them that the recruit ' is doing more to change the negative perception of the Service by affecting change as an example of what the Service is about. Which is more than the " friend " is doing just complaining about things. '
