Personally I don't hate paper straws. I hate cheap paper straws that disintegrate in my drink before I'm half done with it.
There's a high quality paper straw made by SOfi that lasts forever ... but it costs about $0.10 each - no retail business is going to go with this unless they are boutique, not when they could get the "made out of a paper shopping bag" types that they pick up in cases of 1000 for $10 (a penny each).
Predictably ... those are the "fall apart when they hit water" types.
