Lawmakers want to limit Chinese business in military quality of life

Lawmakers’ concerns about doing business with China could affect some quality of life programs in the military community, if proposed amendments in next year’s defense bill become law.
One proposal would ban the sale of goods in commissaries and exchanges that are made in China, assembled in China, or imported into the United States from China. Another would potentially affect a popular online education program, Tutor.com, which employs many military spouses in addition to educating the military community.

Seems to me we could insert a grace period to allow those units and orgs to adjust. Personally, I would love it if all sites and their products were required to identify where they're made or assembled. In other words, if I go to Amazon, each product would potentially have the "made/assembled in" line in all of the descriptions. If I see "made in China," I may be inclined to see if there is a similar product made elsewhere (even if it's more expensive). That alone would likely hurt China more than attempting to ban selling their products on military sites.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin We think alike on this Major but unfortunately the majority of America doesn't. They want cheap products even if they are cheaply made. One has to analyze the longevity of the product vs. cost and see which comes out best. I'm not so sure the people today know how to or want to do this any longer.

Cpl Vic Burk that may be true, but if the words made in China actually give me pause, prompting me to look at other options. I would imagine others might do the same. We may ultimately still buy that product, but I’d like to have options. I refuse to believe China is the only place that makes the inexpensive products and if they are, we need to encourage not only US, but global manufacturing. South and Central America has a lot of untapped potential and our neighbors to the south could use more investments in industrialization.
