Many of those who live in the islands don't own the property their homes are on...it belongs to the government. They have long term (99 year leases on it) so this doesn't surprise me

Not true on the Big Island and I believe it's the same on Maui and Kauai. Most land there sells "fee simple." . . .

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. Our place in Orchidland was 'fee simple'. No way would I have bought a place with the 99 year lease.

So, the Government is just planning on taking all the property that burned down building whatever they want. It's not the governments property it still belongs to the owners they should be allowed to rebuild.

Suresounds like it. The governor sure wants that land badly so his administration can build 'smart housing' and the land owners be damned. I'm sure we'll be seeing eminent domain being used to claim the land. Yay Hawaiian socialism.

LTC Trent Klug - if this happens it could set a precedence for any local, state or Fed, government could legally just take anyone's property if the house or business burns down.
