I've seen both the ugly side and the not so ugly side of unions. My wife was forced to take a break when she wasn't done with a task, and also had to pay dues even though she saw barely $100/week before dues happened (after dues were taken out she got around $80/week). Then there's also the bit that most are familiar with: unions retaining bad employees.

On the other hand because of the post office union my dad retired with a pension even though he had to retire earlier than he planned. That pension has already been exhausted though.

SGT (Join to see) Unions have their place but they also go overboard and demand too much. Thirty bucks an hour is not poverty wages but now they are shooting for forty-six. How are we supposed to convince out children that getting a good education is the right thing to do when they thing they will get jobs that pay like this with nothing more than a watered down high school diploma? (I say that from experience in the classroom)

The $number you hear is the 1st that is put out. The union only uses it to get the company talking. They are fully aware that they aren't going to get that much. When the strike is settled and a new contract signed and ratified it's not going to look like any of the initial offers and counters. As to a good education are you meaning a useless BA just to say I've been to college. Skilled tradesmen will always be paid better than college grads, and be in greater demand. For most of my life I have been paid more than my PhD sister, and She was on clinical staff at Landstuhl and Brooks. I quit college during my senior year in an engineering program. I had completed all the tech courses and had the Liberal arts courses left, that had nothing to do with being a wrench turner. The only time i was without an employer for more than a week, during my working life, was if I decided to take some time off. I've had training and work experience in fixing anything from an O'scope to a torque wrench, even some things most folks wouldn't think of as a tool or piece of test equipment. I don't have a Bachelor's, i do have masters knowledge on a lot of topics. but it didn't come from sitting in a classroom.

SGT (Join to see) - I think you may have missed my point. My point is these kids think they will be the ones to get these jobs so why bother getting an education. There are very few lucky enough to work on an assembly line and get paid this kind of money. I didn't say they will get forty-six buck an hour, that's what they are shooting for. Kind of when you go looking for a car, the car may have a sticker price of $35,000 but if you want a good deal you offer $20,000 for the vehicle for if you start at $30,000 you will be lucky to get it for $33,000.

Cpl Vic Burk - OK, Even employees of non-union businesses are better off if there is a union business in the area. The owners have to show more interest in the health and welfare of the employees to keep their more senior and experienced workers from going to the union shop when there is hiring going on there. Since Union shops often employ 100's if not 1000s of people under one roof. Kids with anything approaching a good work record and a modicum of intelligence stand a good chance of getting hired. Those that have been to trade school, done an apprenticeship in a skilled trade, or had a tech support MOS while active, stand an even better chance. I'll be a proponent of Skilled trades and unions until I pass, I would imagine. Even with my bad attitude I always had job options.

Sorry I'm not a union shop kind of guy. I've seen too many abuses first hand and unions are bull shit.

SGT (Join to see) - I used to work at Marinette Marine putting the Radar's on the LCU Landing Crafts and 3 guys came in drunk still going from the night before so the foreman sent them home. They called a Strike and we were out of work for three weeks because of those drunken assholes and they SHOULD have been Fired. Have you ever worked in a Navy ShipYard? Jesus it's freaking Dangerous enough!

I've seen similar. instead of being sent home folks went to the medical office to sleep it off. How a strike authorization came out of that completely eludes me though.
