This great battle--the second and final meeting of Alexander and Darius III, emperor of the Achaemenid Empire--pitted little Macedon against the largest empire in history up to that time. In their first meeting at Issus in 333 BC, Alexander bested Darius and captured Darius' wife, mother, and two daughters. Two years later, in October 331 BC, Alexander completed the destruction of the Achaemenid Empire and led to Darius' death at the hands of his chief subordinate, Bessus, when Darius headed east to try to revive his empire.

Alexander was not idle during the interim. He spent the first half of 332 BC laying siege to Tyre. His victory there gave him control of the Levant. He then turned his attention to Egypt and, after a brief siege of Gaza, gained control of Egypt. That left him free to turn his attention back to Darius and his empire.
