The retirement expense issues he is referring to mainly pertain to retirement from corporate America. Military retirees are a little different. We usually don't retire when we leave the service, we transition to a new career. It's retirement from that second career he is talking about. The biggest expense we are not truly prepared for at military retirement is unemployment. We find ourselves suddenly out of the income stream and needing to dip into whatever meager savings we have accumulated during our military career. Then after we get back into the work force, we may experience a downsizing and are suddenly out of work again! The only way to prepare for these events is to do a much better job of squirreling away the maximum amount of money before retirement from the service...
