Thanks for sharing this Joe. Considering Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day it certainly falls into that forgotten significance category.

In remembrance of Veterans Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

And here is one of mine;

November Eleventh, 1918 was
The end of the war to end all wars
And how do we now celebrate that day?
With big sales in all the stores

We dont take the time to honor
Those veterans who fell in fight
Were too busy in our everyday life
To give them what is their right

In Flanders, Verdun, and Normandy
Under green fields their bodies lay
At Baatan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa
Many graves still not found today

At the Chosin Reservoir, Inchon, The Yalu River
At Khe Sanh, the A-Shau, at Pleiku
In Somalia, Bosnia, Kuwait, and Baghdad
Those warriors served for me and for you

These soldiers went to those lands to fight
To protect the American way
In Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world
They are serving, still, today

Department store sales and specials
Is not what this day is for
Go out and pay the homage due
To those who fell in war

Or go to your local Veterans Hospital
Volunteer to help, to share
Some time with those old soldiers
Show that, in fact, you care

This is not a day for shopping
For specials at the local mall
Its a day for everyone to give thanks
To the ones who answered the call

Its not just another day off for us
Its a day to show the respect deserved
Please open your heart and remember
Veterans Day is to honor those who served.

My mother was born in 1918. I remember her reciting, "In Flanders Fields" to me when I was 7 or 8 years old. I didn't understand but I knew from Mother's serious tone of voice that it was important. Here's a link to a stirring song of "In Flanders Fields:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky2WKqmrnnI&list=RDKy2WKqmrnnI.
