We were socked in on Thanksgiving. Monsoons in the mountains of I Corp. No supplies for 5 days. The first time I ever experienced hunger pains and they really hurt. One mourning the weather cleared and soon a Huey was hovering over the tree tops throwing out boxes of C rations. We lost a lot of them. The jungle was thick. A few days later we moved to a location where the birds could land. And they brought us a treat. Cooks with a hot Thanksgiving meal. I think of this every year.

They brought us Turkey with all the fixings, including ice cream, in mermites. Unfortunately, a sniper fired some shots our way--nobody was hit, but most of the food went flying. . . .

On the outskirts of Tuy Hoa,Phu Yen province RVN Thanksgiving day 1966,Hueys drop off Mermite containers,pouring rain with white paper plates,(we had already turned in our mess kits for C rats,)still the Army tried,gotta give them credit for trying, Welcome Home Brothers.

I couldn't remember the name of those green cans. Mermite. A friend of mine told me about his dinner. Came into the firebase and it was pouring. They didn't care. Hot chow! They ate with rainwater dripping off their plates.
