Methodology

Funded by the National Institute of Justice (award number 2018-75-CX-0023), and recipient of global media attention, the public mass shooter database project includes four phases :

1. Creation of a comprehensive database of all mass public shootings from 1966 to 2020 coded on nearly 200 life history variables, including mental health history, trauma, interest in past shootings, and situational triggers.
2. Examination of community-level socio-ecological factors of where mass public shootings take place, including, but not limited to, crime rates, measures of social inequality, community mobility, availability of mental health resources, and prevalence of gun stores.
3. In-depth life history interviews with living mass shooters who are currently incarcerated and follow-up interviews with key stakeholders (e.g., family members, first responders, survivors, experts) in the communities where shootings took place.
4. Dissemination of findings, creation of this public website, and implications for evidence-based prevention strategies.
The work is guided by rigorous ethical protocols from the Institutional Review Board at Hamline University and a steadfast commitment to no notoriety for mass shooters.

2.) What is the Connection Between Mass Violence, Racism, and Sexual Violence?

How are acts of mass violence connected to white supremacy?

Research has demonstrated that there is a positive correlation between mass violence like  shootings and white supremacist ideologies. White supremacy has always been synonymous with acts of terrorism and in the desire to commit large scale murder and violence against its victims: - immigrants, LGBTQ folks,  people of the Jewish faith, its naysayers, but mainly Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in the United States.

It is a common misconception that mental illness is the sole driving force of mass violence.

According to the APA, “Recent mass shootings have inevitably led to news reports of the suspected shooters' mental health, but psychological research shows there is no clear link between mental illness and violence”.

4.) FBI Releases 2021 Hate Crime Statistics

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program serves as the national repository for crime data voluntarily collected and submitted by law enforcement. Its primary objective is to generate reliable information for use in law enforcement administration, operation, and management. The 2021 hate crimes data*, submitted by 11,834 law enforcement agencies, provide information about the offenses, victims, offenders, and locations of hate crimes. Of these agencies who submitted incident reports, there were 7,262 hate crime incidents involving 8,673 offenses.

Number of mass shootings in the United States between 1982 and July 2023, by shooter's race or ethnicity

Mass shootings in the U.S. by shooter’s by race/ethnicity as of July 2023
Published by Statista Research Department, Aug 1, 2023
Between 1982 and July 2023, 76 out of the 145 mass shootings in the United States were carried out by White shooters. By comparison, the perpetrator was African American in 26 mass shootings, and Latino in 12. When calculated as percentages, this amounts to 52 percent, 18 percent, and eight percent respectively.

Race of mass shooters reflects the U.S. population
Broadly speaking, the racial distribution of mass shootings mirrors the racial distribution of the U.S. population as a whole. While a superficial comparison of the statistics seems to suggest African American shooters are over-represented and Latino shooters underrepresented, the fact that the shooter’s race is unclear in around nine percent of cases, along with the different time frames over which these statistics are calculated, means no such conclusions should be drawn. Conversely, looking at the mass shootings in the United States by gender clearly demonstrates that the majority of mass shootings are carried out by men.

Association Between Markers of Structural Racism and Mass Shooting Events in Major US Cities

Key Points
Question  Who are the victims of mass shooting events, and are there associated risk factors?
Findings  This cross-sectional study examining approximately 900 mass shooting events found that Black individuals were disproportionately affected by mass shooting events.

Meaning  There is evidence that structural racism may play a role in mass shooting events.

Abstract

Importance  The root cause of mass shooting events (MSEs) and the populations most affected by them are poorly understood.

Objective  To examine the association between structural racism and mass shootings in major metropolitan cities in the United States.

Design, Setting, and Participants  This cross-sectional study of MSEs in the 51 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in the United States analyzes population-based data from 2015 to 2019 and the Gun Violence Archive. The data analysis was performed from February 2021 to January 2022.

Exposure  Shooting event where 4 or more people not including the shooter were injured or killed.

Main Outcome and Measures  MSE incidence and markers of structural racism from demographic data, Gini income coefficient, Black-White segregation index, and violent crime rate.

Results  There were 865 MSEs across all 51 MSAs from 2015 to 2019 with a total of 3968 injuries and 828 fatalities. Higher segregation index (ρ = 0.46, P = .003) was associated with MSE incidence (adjusted per 100 000 population) using Spearman ρ analysis. Percentage of the MSA population comprising Black individuals (ρ = 0.76, P < .001), children in a single-parent household (ρ = 0.44, P < .001), and violent crime rate (ρ = 0.34, P = .03) were other variables associated with MSEs. On linear regression, structural racism, as measured by percentage of the MSA population comprising Black individuals, was associated with MSEs (β = 0.10; 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.14; P < .001). Segregation index (β = 0.02, 95% CI, −0.03 to 0.06; P = .53), children in a single-parent household (β = −0.04, 95% CI, −0.11 to 0.04; P = .28), and Gini income coefficient (β = −1.02; 95% CI, −11.97 to 9.93; P = .93) were not associated with MSEs on linear regression.

Conclusions and Relevance  This study found that major US cities with higher populations of Black individuals are more likely to be affected by MSEs, suggesting that structural racism may have a role in their incidence. Public health initiatives aiming to prevent MSEs should target factors associated with structural racism to address gun violence.

Published by Statista Research Department, Nov 3, 2023

Since 1982, an astonishing 142 mass shootings have been carried out in the United States by male shooters. In contrast, only four mass shootings (defined by the source as a single attack in a public place in which four or more victims were killed) have been carried out by women.

Abstract
This study provides a quantitative examination of gender-based mass shootings in America from 1966–2018. Gender-based mass shootings refer to attacks motivated by grievances against women, divided into four categories based on a specific woman or women in general, as well as whether they directly target the source of their grievances. Findings indicate that specific woman–targeted shooters were the most common and significantly different from their counterparts in their domestic violence history, racial diversity, and engagement in spree attacks. When comparing all gender-based attacks against other mass shootings, significant differences include relationship status, children, domestic violence history, substance abuse history, and suicide. This investigation provides implications for gender and mass shooting scholars, as well as practitioners developing strategies for intervention and prevention.
