Not really light punishment. He was convicted of 3rd degree assault (max of 18 months) and criminally negligent homicide (max of 3 years). He got 14 months in prison followed by 4 years of supervised release. As a first offender, I wouldn't have been surprised by a lesser sentence, including probation.
