What Trump and his legal team are trying to establish is his carte blanche immunity as the president and the requisite procedures necessary to convict him. It pivots around their claim that not having immunity would be detrimental to the office of the presidency. Murdering a political rival is counter to democracy. It's what dictators do, but then, he is a dictator in waiting.
