The year is early. Contrary to what is indicated in the article, shrink is calculated on the basis of inventory results. It is reported on the basis of percent to sales. There is a difference. As those inventories occur and businesses see what their write offs are, they will begin complaining again. It is difficult to determine how much is shoplifting, internal theft and accounting errors, but the total shrink tells a definite story.

SGT (Join to see) Doing Security at Shopping Malls I am Quite Aware of the Problem with Shoplifting but there is Plenty that Comes into the Equation. Stores don't want to Pay Workers Comp if an Employee is Injured by a Shoplifter, They don't want to Pay their Employees to go to court to Prosecute Shoplifters. Retailers Most Times don't want to go thru the effort to Prosecute.

It feels like shoplifting has gone from a petty annoyance to a full-blown crime wave! Brick-and-mortar stores are getting hit hard, and it's enough to make you wonder if "retail apocalypse" isn't just a dramatic turn of phrase anymore. I saw this article https://www.retailguide.cz/properties/shopland-galerie-ostrava/ recently about a store that completely revamped their security system, and it got me thinking. Maybe the answer isn't just about catching shoplifters after the fact, but making it so darn difficult to steal in the first place. This store improved the security system, which naturally had a positive effect on potential buyers.
