Many times during war, the satirist has a better grip of what's going on than the actual leaders conducting operations in the national interest.

Bill Mauldin did more for Soldier morale with Willie and Joe than any general ever could. Hell, they still convey the gripes of service personnel today, but that's just my opinion.

One I share wholeheartedly. When I was editor of the Tropic Lightning News in Hawaii in '74, we produced an April Fool's edition of the paper called Tasteless Leftover News and came up with original gag articles like "Fighting Pair Now Humph for the Army" about a husband and wife machine-gun team in the Wolfhounds named Humph. The photo showed my wife wearing a steel pot, loaded down with a ruck and me standing there with a bush hat on and a shovel in one hand pointing to where she should dig our position. We had another about a helicopter crew landing at a north shore nudist colony claiming engine failure. We also spoofed our regular columns. OCPA DA was pissed at us, bit the troops in the division loved it. You couldn't find a copy two days after it came out . . .
