The British rock group, the Troggs made it famous, but the song was written by American, Chip Taylor!

Did the 60s make the music or did the music make the 60s? I started learning about the Vietnam War in the 80s and as I grew into my army career, the 60s music just seem to explain the military in a perfect way. Listen to Fortunate Son and We Gotta Get Out of This Place while in Afghanistan. Fortunate Son really is not me as I volunteered for everything, to include deployment, truthful song none the less.

It’s hard to say, MAJ Byron Oyler, but the music was incredible! Here’s some personal rock music/military trivia for you.
I was at Camp Mackall for SF Phase I in May, 1970. The Kent State massacre occurred on 4MAY70. Of course, the entire Army went crazy and we were pulling guard duty in the middle of nowhere, but we didn’t know why until we got back to Fort Bragg. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young went into overdrive and “Ohio” was released as a single that June while I was still at Fort Bragg! It’s always been a very meaningful song to me.

The B side was “Find the Cost of Freedom”, another extraordinary war song.
