This Canadian Ocean liner, the RMS Empress of Britain reminds me of the RMS Queen Mary Hotel ship in Long Beach, California. In October, 1940 it was strafed, bombed, set on fire and disabled by a long-range German reconnaissance bomber. 25 crew and 20 passengers lost their lives.It was later torpedoed by a German U-boat while being towed.
It was the largest allied ship sunk by a U-boat in World War 2.

Excellent video. The logic behind attacking a disabled ship under tow baffles me. Perhaps U-boat commanders had a quota system.

A likelihood was to make sure that it couldn't be brought to operational status again.
A truism in attrition warfare is it is much more preferable to wound enemy personnel but destroy enemy equipment, and Germany was very much focused on tonnage warfare against UK shipping during WWII.
