APOD: 2024 December 29 – Methane Bubbles Frozen in Lake Baikal

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to a terrestrial Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for December 29, 2024.
A 'rift lake' is a lake formed as a result of subsidence related to movement on faults in an area of extensional tectonics in the continental crust. Located in southern Siberia, Lake Baikal is the largest (by volume) and deepest fresh water rift lake in the world.
As you can see in today's photo, Lake Baikal is also the only confined freshwater lake in which direct evidence of gas hydrates (e.g. hydrothermal activity) exists. We are looking at bubbles of methane frozen in the water ice extending from the lake's surface. As the ice thaws each spring, the bubbles are released. Lake Baikal's age is estimated at 25–30 million years, making it the most ancient lake in geological history. It is unique among large, high-latitude lakes, as its sediments have not been scoured by overriding continental ice sheets.

Good morning to you as well, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! It would be great if they detected living creatures in the lower reaches of where these Methane Bubbles form... if the geothermal vents were warm enough... Excellent share Bill!!!

As Dept Increases, Temperatures And Oxygen Decrease To The Point Where It Was Theorized, "Life Could Not Exist" ~ And Even When Space Ships Re-Enter The Earths Atmosphere After Being Subjected To The Extreme Heat And Extremer Cold, They've Found Microscopic Life Clinging To The Capsules. Maybe Even Wearing Those:
