Good evening, Rallypoint, and welcome to the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for January 16, 2025.
What do you get when you merge datasets from a visible telescope and the Dark Energy Camera? In this case, the Thousand Ruby Galaxy (aka M83). Located some 12 million light years away in the constellation Hydra, Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille first discovered M83 February 17, 1752. This composite image was captured at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory near Santiago, Chilé.
