Also the WWII hero Roland Bragg shared the same last name with the West Point graduate, General Braxton Bragg, (They were not related however) whom served in the Confederate Forces during the civil War. Part of the naming of Post was to bring the country back together and end the separation between north and South. The renaming of many posts because they were named after Confederate leaders is contrary to the intent to end the divide and have the common identity of ALL of us as citizens of the United States.

Except that's a myth of course - part of the overall "lost cause" myth of re-writing the history of the civil war broadly - and not the real reason these bases were names as they were. Ft. Bragg opened in 1918, not during the Reconstruction era. As the nation mobilized for both world wars, political leaders amended Jim Crow-era laws to allow more minority troops into the military’s ranks. These names of local Confederate “heroes” who were popular among southern politicians and locals, and chosen as a way to appease racist white political leaders who didn’t want a more integrated military nearby. Many of the men chosen weren’t even particularly effective military leaders, but it served the purpose not of unifying, but of perpetuating the segregated south, and transactionally, providing the bases the Army needed to draft and train Soldiers needed in these major conflicts. Keeping or returning to names of men who owned (as property) the ancestors of 20% or more of today's volunteer recruits does NOT promote a common identity of citizenship IN ANY WAY. It's shameful.

Having said that, PFC Roland Bragg, from Sabbuttus, ME - a paratrooper and mechanic in the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment - is a genuine WWII hero. A fortunate coincidence for people who just can't reconcile our actual history.

COL (Join to see) - A myth perhaps but a way of marketing the concept to the public, both North and South. Perception by others often times makes it easier to move the ideas and in this case perhaps increase the chance of bringing the South back into the Union over the separation left over from the Civil War into WWI.
