I have been a proponent of the Skilled trades all my life. It enabled my wives to be stay at home moms if they wished. I enjoyed the work and retirement is better because I had enough income to invest in retirement options. Don't force your children into college. when I enlisted I was already a tradesman, as such I had more options on a choice of MOS.

All male blood relatives in my generation were skilled tradesmen, except me who did go to college and into the Air Force from there. However, its clearly in my blood as I was constantly remodeling our homes by myself and eventually build our second home on the Oregon coast almost completely by myself. Hopefully, we'll move past college as a requisite to anything coming later while the ability to build, repair and install will be renewed as a real-life skill set.
