Interesting video clip, MSG Billy Brumfield about how 1.5 million of European sailors and American sailors were abducted for slavery by the Muslims on the Barbary Coast. In the 1700s. When Thomas Jefferson and John Adams traveled overseas to talk to a Muslim ambassador in Europe to ask why this was being perpetrated, he said that the Koran gives them permission to do so— because nonMuslims are “infidels.” [ therefore no rights, no freedoms]… so that must be the same beliefs now in traditional Islam!

If you are interested in the Period, I suggest "Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates.". Not only does it go into the history of conflict, but tells the story of the establishment of a permanent Navy.
For those unfamiliar with it, while the Continental Congress authorized a Navy, it was essentially made up of privateers. The "real" Navy was established by the Naval Act in 1794, specifically to deal with the pirates. The six frigates authorized and the experienced gained against the Barbary Pirates is a good part of the reason that the US Navy faired so well in the War of 1812.

It appears that if it was true then it must be true now Sister Ann. They're big on tradition.
