Thanks A1C (Join to see) for sharing the 9 things that Veterans will always have in their closet. I am probably older than many of the vets you know so many of the items on the list are not in my closet.
1. The Flask Vest
2. Ruck Sack
3. Letters From Home [Yes]
4. Dog Tags [wear them on my key chain]
5. PT Belt [ the first decade or so we ran PT in combat boots and fatigues 74-84].
6. The Woobie [Yes - I have my woodland pattern poncho liners and a green girl comforter from West Point in the 1970s] Updated - thanks CW2 Christopher Esparza
7. American Flag Patch [no, but I have the flags that I have been awarded]
8. Shoe Polish [Yes]
9. Unit Clothing [Lost most of it when we were evicted a few years ago.]

CW2 Christopher Esparza - thanks for translating for me. When I saw the Woobie I thought it might be a star wars character. :-)

CW2 Christopher Esparza - poncho liners kept me warm even when wet while sleeping outside in Germany on exercises in the early 1980s.

Interesting list. Like LTC Stephen F. , I'm from an earlier generation of veterans. Also, I was in the AF.
1. The Flask Vest [never saw one while on active duty]
2. Ruck Sack [never issued one]
3. Letters From Home [destroyed in home vandalism]
4. Dog Tags [Yes]
5. PT Belt [never issued one]
6. The Woobie [Never issued one]
7. American Flag Patch [Yes! Very proud to have worn on flight suit after 1976]
8. Shoe Polish [Yes]
9. Unit Clothing [Yes. T-shirts, sweat shirts, jacket]

Also, have:
1. Utility uniforms, BDUs [good for camping, 4-wheeling, changing oil in car, etc.]
2. Mess Dress [useless uniform field grade officers were expected to have]
3. Wheel hat with farts and darts [useless hat Lt Col and above were expected to have]
4. Service Dress uniform, a.k.a., Class As
