Made my final house payment in 92 two months short of 20 years which was our original contract. As we traded up the length of the contracts increased as well, but I made enough double payments to eliminate years off the agreements. I was in one of my banks during a run in 2008 and what I saw was a lot of irresponsible people not just those with excessive debt, but also the ones who granted the loans. I had a substantial amount invested in that bank and would have lost thousands had it not been for government intervention. And still it took years to rescue the true value of the stock.
