SGT (Join to see) these are kinsmen fighting. The US has intervened from decades in Middle Eastern affairs and when we pull out the old ways take over. I wonder, when did we start involving ourselves in Middle Eastern Affairs, 1950s?

CPL Douglas Chrysler Whew! Within the government records and meetings there are the keys, as to why we got involved and stay involved.

We first got involved shortly after independence, seeking safe passage for our commerce. It did tick up after WWII, but not just for oil. Supporting Israel was also a reason as was the fact that the region was just as much of a proxy war between us and the Soviets as East Asia (Korea, Vietnam).

In fact, Moscow encouraged Iranian leftists to join the Mullahs in seizing power from the Shah, precisely for this reason. The Shah was friendly to the west, so if he could be toppled, that benefited the USSR in the regional balance of power. Then they said nothing when the Mullahs turned on the leftists and slaughtered them for the degenerates that they were.
