It really isn't that far out. The only reason, in my opinion, that it doesn't exist already is ethics. It's easy to manipulate bacterial genomes, but human genomes are a completely different story. Two years ago a paper was published where they created a semi-synthetic, self-replicating organism using what they referred to as unnatural base pairs (other than the regular ATCG bases in the genetic code). Theoretically if you put aside ethics and apply a so-called "veil of ignorance," then the applications for a synthetic genome are endless. Advancements such as enhanced healing, increased muscle strength and stamina, lightning reflexes, even better night vision are only some of the possibilities you could apply to the future warrior. How cool would that be able to go on night missions without the need for NVGs?
