This is the proverbial slippery slope. We are well down it now. Trying to exterminate/squelch historical and cultural items is dangerous. There are those that are too easily offended. I have no dog in the fight on this. As far as I know, none of my direct ancestors fought on either side.
I do have an interest in understand our history and remembering it and that includes monuments to those on both sides. This is the PC crowd with nothing better to do. One day, a hundred years ago, historians will look at this and shake their head. You do not have to endorse every idea of any group to appreciate their history/struggles and how they remembered their leaders and those that died in battle.
Americans get outraged when a group like ISIS shows up and destroys ancient religious and cultural sites in the middle east and those same people have no issue with the left doing it here.
