Having an unloaded gun is the same as having a brick. Veterans, most of whom have extensive firearms training and experience know how to safely handle weapons. The issue to me is keeping children away from guns.

I kept loaded guns in my house, trained my children on gun safety at an early age, controlled their access, and took them out shooting often. I never had a problem with my children or any children getting into my guns.

I would disagree that a loaded and unlocked gun is unsafe in the hands of a trained professional (ie veteran).

When my grandchildren are over my carry gun is in the bedside safe, which I can open in less than 2 seconds. Otherwise, it is on my person or close at hand.

Words have meaning. The link does work. The author is confused over the purpose of a firearm, proper storage vs at the ready, then wait for it. There is a caring aspect of safety due to a high risk behavior. So there is an intent here with the Medical profession for firearm control. I found it interesting that the author did not discuss the total % increase DoD and the VA have spent on narcotics and psychotropics for the last 18 years and compare that with the previous 18 years. I don't think we have a gun problem with Veterans. We have an over zealous medical profession that has over prescribed medications to our service members and it has caused unintended consequences.

If you keep a firearm unloaded what good is it for defense I guess you could throw it and when people talk about guns and suicide it makes no sense because if you know anything about mental health you know if someone is intent on commuting suicide they are going to find a way no matter what
