Well all I will say is the ANG and USAFRs do this and have for many years. I have always felt this sends unprepared NCOs in were an airman mentality is all that is available. When you deploy lunch and quitting time are not first and foremost. I am not saying his happens in every case, but we have deployed people that have LOEs returned as ineffective and unprepared for duty. Promotions aren't all about making people feel good- it is about putting people in job to make decisions to accomplish the mission.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - problems is you have to promote them to keep them. We lose many 4N (Med Techs) after their first enlistment. Do their 4 and gone- get the college and bonus money. If they stayed SrA and continued to learn they would not be in the military. They see SSgt and sometimes TSgt way too soon. So my choice as a commander is too retain/promote or start the process over with a new kid that might not shake out. Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth

Maj Marty Hogan Ya, reality I suppose. I'm old fashioned I guess, I joined to serve my country and not get training and go off and get rich. But that's apparently not what motivates folks these days.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - and that sir is why Apr 2021 is my target. My ideas and leadership is antiquated because I feel members should earn their place and hold them to expectations. We just promoted someone to LTC a year ago with 12 years in and no prior. Horrible manager- and runs a DHS office in the real world. Brags about 7 regional offices being part of their responsibility. Witnessing the trainwreck of the programs they are in charge of on drill I am going to say DHS is in trouble. I had to defer many times to decisions I knew would not pan out as rank trumped smart decisions. Then when the issue would come to fruition that I had predicted- I had to do the leg work to fix it and the brunt of the resentment. Zero accountability or pet projects are always fun.

I think fast tracking E-6 and above is a good is idea. However, promoting below that at a gfaster rate isn't agood idea. We have Airmen that are SSgts in 4 years. They haven't even gotten the full technical expertise by that time much less the leadership skill they need to be effective leaders. IMHO

Agree in principal, but there are fastburners where early promotion could apply.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Yep but they are the exception rather than the norm.. That is what BTZ's are for IMHO.

It was a whole lot harder back in the day. They even go from Sr Airman to effing Staff Sgt. now. WTF. Thats like 18 months TIG off getting to SSGT. now.
