What is worse... when a Passenger walks Up the Idiot and hands It back to Him ... In Flight...
Saw it on a Flight from San Francisco to Hawaii...

I'd bet the story would really change to how a passenger was arrested for sneaking an Air Marshal service weapon aboard a flight...

I am a retired FAM Federal Air Marshal. In the beginning we could hang our hats on the fact that we are more selective than Harvard. We wanted a minimum of 6 years combined law enforcement and military experience and our offices looked like an old operators retirement home. I worked with people from every special ops unit in the US to include Seal Team 6 and Delta.
Then HR diversity kicked in we also added a college degree to the hiring requirements, and we started hiring anyone who could fog a mirror. The degree pretty much excluded the best military shooters that we wanted.
I was on the hiring board when we couldnt hire an Army Ranger turned Ohio State Trouper. As a Trouper he had an award for bravery. He was a PT stud and a shooting instructor. He also had a letter or recommendation from Delta MSGT Norm Hooten. Hooten was one of our training staff, so we did call and verify. Hooten verified that this guy was exactly who we wanted but we couldn't hire him because he didn't have a degree.
That same hiring cycle we hired a guy with no job experience who had been a sous chief, but that guy had a masters degree. We were all really pissed off at that point, because it was happening all over the country. The idiot obama appointment who ran our agency when that changed thought it was more important that we were educated and diverse, rather that proven operators.

CW3 Harvey K. - I would love to be CNN's source, but CNN would not love me.

CW3 Harvey K. - Our entire job is being able to shoot people quickly while standing on an unstable shooting platform. Speed, accuracy, and decision making skills are all that matter. Sadly some dingleberry at the top decided that is was more important to look good on paper than actually be able to perform under stress and save lives.

Hopefully the department will soon go back to its previous standards now that we have a new administration!

PO1 John Miller - I hope that is the way that it works but 8 years of hiring and promoting the wrong people is going to be a problem for a while

Not a really bright or smart move, his next job might be flipping burgers.
