I would like to think this is misdirection/misinformation, but frankly I don't give our Navy leaders that much credit anymore. These are not the same cold warriors like PO1 William "Chip" Nagel!

Add that the ridiculousness of the LCS program, and I have to admit that this is probably true. If that is the case, according to the report, about the only thing that would work is the periscope!

As far as the "new" way of shipbuilding/airframe building where the contractor wins the contract without a proven design, maybe we should revert back to what worked for many years... You want a contract, look at the specs, and then build a prototype and the Navy will bid on which they think is best. But, I am just a crusty, bitter (in general not at the Navy) old Chief Engineer that has done multiple yard periods and overseen the building of 2 ships...What do I know...

LT Brad McInnis I sure would love to speak to anyone in the R&D area about how the CRAZY LCS fiasco was ever allowed to happen. That entire program just makes no sense to me. We do need a close-in ability to fight in the littorals, but the strange way it was done, well I just do not understand it. From the no ownership concept to switching out mission modules and crew? It seems like a ship/task designed to not succeed.

CMDCM Gene Treants - I worked on designing the CIC and training programs when I was on DESRON Staff. My DH buddy was OPS on one of them and we were all in the same building. I still have no idea how it all was supposed to work... It's kinda like we forgot how to Navy, if you knwo what I mean!

LT Brad McInnis - as I watched this develop - after I got out of the Navy - it looked that way to me too. My CO on one of my ships and I used to discuss the need for a good close-in weapons system, but this did not seem to be the correct answer - at least to me - as we searched for a way to really fight in the littorals.

CMDCM Gene Treants - In all reality, I operated pretty close in in a DDG. Never had a problems. And it is a proven platform, that melds seamlessly with the rest of the fleet. But they don't listen to us...

WOW! Cost over-runs we usually expect, but if the drive system is untested or doesn't work that might be a problem. Hopefully they will get these things worked out.
