I deer hunted with Model 29 (exactly like this, (8 3/8" ) for a couple of decades until my eyesight started failing. 2 of my most memorable shots were at an exceedingly long (for handgun) range, which at the time, I had no doubt about my ability to connect. The last one was a 10 pt. buck at 84 yards ( measured later with a rangefinder) across a "hollow" separated by a creek. Can't pull it off without Optics, nowadays‼️ Point of aim was at spine-level above the lung/heart sweet spot. Impact was very surprising... it was at the spine exactly where I aimed, thinking the 225 gr. JHP would drop into "the zone".

Nice shooting‼️ 75 paces at a military cadence of 30" steps would be about 58.3 yards at a running deer. That's certainly noteworthy‼️

SSG William Jones - I actually know my pace count and figured it pretty close to 65 yards. The ground was relatively level and during daylight, I usually figured about 116-117 per 100 yards for daytime on the flat. Still, there was a bit of luck in that shot that I will freely acknowledge.

A fine shot nonetheless. "Educated Luck" is undoubtedly what I experienced too, as my shot didn't follow the ballistic arc that I had calculated on.

SSG William Jones - It was normally a shot I would have passed on, but I had been hunting all morning while it was sleeting, crested the top of a ridge and there were deer going every which way. I was pot hunting that day anyway, so I made a quick pick and took the shot. I knew I hit him, but he dropped over the far side of the ridge. He dropped where he landed.
Yes, practiced luck may be a better word for it. I shot that cannon enough in those days that I was relatively certain I could hit what I aimed at in any reasonable range. Now days I use a rifle.

Sure, practice the long shot but just keep in mind that the vast majority of self-defense shootings occur up close and personal. This reminds me of golfers who spend most of their practice time at the driving range when 80% of the game is pitching and putting

CPT Jack Durish Morning Jack, long time no see. I'm not saying to forego up close drills and training, just add some distance training also.
