This raises an interesting question: What is a "Native American"? We are all the descendants of immigrants. Even those commonly referred to as "Native Americans". They are the descendants of people who crossed a land bridge from Africa-Europe-Asia where the fossil record shows modern man first appeared. There is no evidence that any form of man began spontaneously on the American Continent. So, how many generations must pass before We the People are all Native Americans?

SSG Pete Fleming - You should take a DNA test. CPT Jack Durish raises a good philosophical point however, biologically people that are "native american" do have unique genetic characteristics that we can distinctly say make them "American."

SSG Pete Fleming - I don't know. It depends if you concider yourself one I suppose. I had it done and I'd recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with anthropology and biology. Or you are just curious.

SSG Carlos Madden - There are two points and (respectfully) you are missing one Point. Point A, your are correct, I need to do the whole DNA thing. I do pan to. Point B, is what is the statues of limitations? At what point should a person legally be called a Native? 500 years? 10,000 years? You can live in a state for a year and be considered a resident and get state benefits and instate college tuition, etc... But how long should a person be able to trace their roots to cease being European?

This is interesting in that it starts after immigration of Europeans. What about pre-1492?

So, it is true, we are all a nation of migrants. Hmmm, does that mean that the so-called Native American was a migrant, just like the rest of us? No one was illegal at that time because there were no laws. As we progressed, the need for immigrants were needed and laws were passed to make sure we had sufficient labor to continue with our industrial revolution, no due to altruism. Laws were passed to limit the numbers and protect our natural born citizens, and the term illegal came about. You knocked on the door of Ellis Island and after meeting certain requirements you were passed to become citizens. Times long gone by.

Do you not think race was a deciding factor?

MSG Stan Hutchison - You need to amplify on that question. Immigrants and migrants come in all colors.

MCPO Roger Collins - I think at various times, the race of the potential was very instrumental. The block on Asians in the late 1800's. Limiting Jewish people in the 1930's. Etc.
