Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for February 22, 2025.
Notice anything interesting about the 'crater' in the center of today's APOD? If you compare it to surrounding 'craters' you can see that it appears to not have a raised perimeter. Scientists believe that this 'crater' is actually a volcanic caldera oriented along a fissure that extends to the left (northwest) and right (east-southeast). If there had been an Apollo 19 mission, this was one of the candidate landing sites. From Earth, scientists thought this site could mark an area of active volcanism. We will likely need to wait until there is an active moon based before this region of the lunar surface can be studied further. This image of Rima Hyginus was captured earlier this month by an amateur astrophotographer from Italy.

A very interesting photo capture of this huge fissure Rima Hyginus, (almost like a crevasse) on our moon... It adds to the wonder of our nearest celestial object... fascinating!
