Good evening, Rallypoint, and welcome to the January 23, 2025 edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).
Why is it called the "Little Sombrero" Galaxy? Probably because of the distances involved. The Sombrero Galaxy (M104) is 28 million light years away from us. The Little Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 7814) is 40 million light years away...but both are estimated to be about the same size.
