While I sympathize with her, she nevertheless assaulted a police officer and there's seldom ever justification to do that. If she'd have stayed passive and been carried off the bus and arrested, I could see that being expunged. As it was, she did appeal and the "violation" of the segregation law, and disorderly conduct were removed.
"She was initially convicted of violating the city's segregation law, disorderly conduct and assaulting an officer, but she appealed and only the assault charge stuck."

The article said she resisted, and fought and scratched the officer. I've handled domestic disturbances where women's nails were almost like a weapon in themselves. LOL Seriously, the Appeals court reviewed the case and only upheld the assault charge but not the other two. So, I'm inclined to accept that it was assault. Today, such an assault would be classed as a felony since it was on a police officer.
